How Does EMDR Therapy Work?
EMDR therapy follows a specific protocol, which includes eight phases.
Phase 1
Assessment of history and current symptoms
Phase 2:
Preparing for therapy with coping skills and relaxation techniques
Phase 3:
Identifying specific memories that will be targeted in therapy
Phase 4:
Rapid eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation are used to support the individual in reprocessing the traumatic memories
Phase 5:
Individuals will work to replace negative beliefs with positive ones
Phase 6:
Consolidating the gains made in the previous phases
Phase 7:
Enhancing future coping skills
Phase 8:
Evaluating results and determining if further sessions are needed
