“We wear the mask that grins and lies.”
~Paul Laurence Dunbar
Hiding behind the mask.
Have you ever stopped to think, “What did Paul Laurence Dunbar mean in the opening line of his poem, ‘We Wear the Mask’”? What a powerful yet accurate statement!
There are times in all of our lives when we choose to put on the mask, believing that there is safety behind the mask.
If we can just hide from the world, the tornado building inside of us will remain unseen.
Struggles make the mask hard to bear.
What we don’t realize is as the tornado inside grows, that mask gets heavier and harder to pick up, feeling at times like a clump of cement.
For a while, we continue to struggle to put that mask on, hoping no one notices how we have changed over time, and how life has changed us.
Until one day, that mask becomes so difficult to bear that it breaks, and we can no longer hide what’s been happening inside.
Time to look behind the mask.
We know it’s hard. For so long, you’ve worn the mask that everything is okay – while in reality, you’re barely holding on.
